Zara’s Story
Zara is an Afghan attorney and women’s rights advocate who has spent her life providing representation to women with little or no access to legal resources. Her commitment to this work is deeply personal. As a child growing up under Taliban rule in the 1990s, she experienced firsthand the regime’s cruelty toward women andgirls. When the Taliban banned girls from attending school, Zara refused to accept enforced illiteracy as her community’s fate. She secretly taught girls in her neighborhood how to read and write: an act of quiet resistance that foreshadowed her future legal advocacy.
After the Taliban retreated, Zara served as an advisor on women’s affairs to the former Afghan Vice President, helping shape initiatives focused on gender equity and women’s civic participation. She also volunteered with nonprofit organizations advocating for Afghan women’s rights, extending her impact beyond the courtroom into national policy and grassroots organizing.

Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, Zara’s past work made her a target. Taliban authorities sought to arrest her and continued to harass and intimidate her friends and family because of her professional advocacy and government advisory role.
Facing escalating threats, Zara fled Afghanistan alongside her 16-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son, undertaking an arduous journey to the United States. For Zara, the journey was not only about survival: it was about securing a future for her children grounded in education and equality. A lifelong believer in the transformative power of education, she remained steadfast throughout displacement so her daughter would be able to attend school freely.
Today, Zara strives to lead by example for her daughter, pursuing an American legal education so she can return to family law litigation and continue defending endangered women in both Afghanistan and the United States.
